Overview
Iluka North Wall guards the mouth of the Clarence River, and the wall throws up some genuinely wedgy right-handers as swell bounces back off it. The wave breaks over sand, so the sandbank sets the shape on any given day.
When It Works
This is a right-hander's spot. It breaks best on a southeast (SE) swell but will draw anything from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S). A solid east-southeast swell serves up the wedgiest rights as it rebounds off the wall, and on bigger days those rights can rifle off down the beach. Lefts turn up on a northeast swell, though Turners around the corner usually has the edge when that happens. It's a consistent break and works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for west (W) offshore wind. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. The north end under the bluff can also come good in a northeast wind.
Local Tips
The waves here are mellow enough for beginners, and you can expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on. Stay switched on in the water, though, as it gets rippy and there's a shark presence.
Access
Getting here means a long drive around the bridges from Yamba. Once you arrive you'll find restrooms, showers, camping and a lifeguard, plus a car park with free parking alongside paid and roadside options.
