Imperial Beach is a powerful, high-quality beachbreak that comes alive in winter. When good sandbars form around the pier, it fires long, reeling rights and lefts that can turn back-breakingly hollow over the sand.
When It Works
This is a consistent break that picks up swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with west swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east offshore wind. The bank breaks on mid and high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
The lineup stays quiet even when it's firing, so there are waves on offer for anyone willing to make the paddle. It's a demanding beachbreak, though: expect a tough paddle-out once there's real size, and keep in mind the water here is often polluted.
Access
You'll find showers and a surf shop nearby, plus a car park with free parking and roadside parking as backup. The break sits west of Ocean Lane, between Carnation and Encanto Avenues.
