Indicators Surf Forecast Guide

Indicators is a right-hand reef and point break just down the beach from Domes, around the corner and nearly in front of the Lighthouse. The name comes from the exposed rock sitting in the middle of the lineup, which doubles as a reliable read on sets approaching The Point and Maria's. When it's on, it's a serious proposition: the takeoff sits nearly in front of that rock, and the truly bold can tempt fate at the Deadman's peak right in front of it. Race down the line and a warped section stands up over a chunk of reef that's exposed on all but the highest tides. That section can deliver the best part of the wave, so be ready when it starts to bowl up around the rock. It's also a decent way to measure the tube. The rock has a useful side effect too, separating the outside peak from the inside section and spreading the lineup out a little.

When It Works

The reef draws swell from west to north-northwest (W-NNW) and is usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, which lines up with the head-high to double-overhead range it's known for. Autumn and winter are the money months. Late summer and fall can turn on with tropical cyclone swells, but late fall through early spring is when it shows up with any consistency. Expect to work for your waves, since the paddle can be a decent effort depending on the swell.

Wind and Tide

Look for east-northeast (ENE) offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from north-northeast through east to southeast (NNE-E-SE). The tidal swing here isn't dramatic, but lower is generally better — it works on low and mid tide, and a rising tide is the better call.

Local Tips

This is expert territory, on a shortboard or bodyboard. The lineup stays fairly quiet, with just a few hearty locals trading waves, and the vibe can feel reserved. Keep the rock in the takeoff zone front of mind, and remember the reef sits exposed on all but the highest tides. The water can get a little dirty after rains.

Access

Park just before the lighthouse and amble through the brush.
