Overview
Ishinamigawa is a river-mouth break (gawa means river) that spins off a breakwall running parallel to the shore. The bottom is boulders and cobblestone the river has deposited, and when the swell lines up the wave can get hollow, breaking as both a left and a right.
When It Works
It comes alive on swell from northeast to east, with northeast (NE) the best direction, when the rivermouth breakwall throws up hollow, spinning walls. The wave is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and is moderately consistent, so it pays to time your sessions for when everything lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
With its boulder bottom and punishing paddle-outs, this is one for intermediate surfers rather than beginners. Expect a moderately busy lineup, and busier on weekends when it's on.
