Island Beach State Park surf guide

Island Beach State Park is a well-known surf spot located on the New Jersey coastline. It's a laid-back area that offers a mix of natural beauty and the thrill of catching some waves. The place is pretty remote, making it a good choice for those looking to escape the crowds, especially during the summer months when access can be limited. You’ll need either a 4WD vehicle to get around or be ready for a serious hike to reach the beach.

The surf at Island Beach State Park works best with a Southeast swell. You'll find that it can handle waves as small as 2 feet (about 0.6 meters) and can get nice and hollow on lower tides. With an endless selection of peaks to choose from all the way down to the jetty at the southern end, both lefts and rights are available. The waves typically break over sand, making it a decent spot for beginners. Wind from the west is preferable, and you can surf here during low, mid, or high tides.

While the waves are consistent and rarely crowded, there are some things to keep in mind. Be aware of the currents and watch out for jellyfish in the water. It’s a unique environment that requires an entrance fee, but it’s worth the experience for many surfers. If you're into camping, you can set up for up to three nights on the beach with a 4WD pass if you plan on fishing. Just remember to get there early in the summer to avoid the gate closure meant to protect the area.
