Overview
Itampolo Lefts serves up reliable, lined-up left-handers that peel over live coral in front of the village. It is the standout peak in the bay, holding its shape consistently while the reefs on the north side tend to break in more disorganised peaks.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest through southeast (SW-SE), with southwest swell the best match for clean, well-organised lefts. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and thanks to its consistency, rideable days turn up often.
Wind and Tide
Look for east offshore wind to groom the faces. The left works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate-friendly left for surfers comfortable riding over a coral reef. Expect a quiet lineup, with solo sessions common out here.
Access
Getting out is the main effort. Acclimatise with a few days in nearby Tulear or Anakao first, then plan for a 10 to 12 hour drive to Itampolo. From the village it is a 1 km paddle to the reef, so a local fishing boat is the safer and more practical way out.
