Jalama Beach County Park Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Jalama Beach County Park is a shifty, chunky beachbreak and the northernmost surf area in Santa Barbara County. It packs three recognized peaks: the Beachbreak in front of the campground, Cracks just to the south, and Tarantulas (T's) further down the beach. The Beachbreak is all semi-hollow, shifting sandbars, while Tarantulas is a faster, more consistent left with a rippable right that peels toward the boulder-strewn inside. Most days it's a fairly ordinary beachbreak, but the right combo swell can make it exceptional.

When It Works

Jalama draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), and it's at its best on a southwest (SW) swell. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, serving up both lefts and rights, and it can turn on in any season. Tarantulas holds its shape more reliably than the Beachbreak, so the jog south is usually worth it, while Cracks is the one to try when the swell is too small for T's.

Wind and Tide

Look for a northeast (NE) offshore wind and get there early: the cold morning offshores are the window, since the wind tends to rip most afternoons. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide the better call, though high tide suits the Beachbreak sandbars best and Tarantulas prefers mid.

Local Tips

This one suits intermediate and expert surfers, and it takes just about any board, from shortboards and fish through longboards, guns, and bodyboards. Expect a busy lineup when it's working, with an atmosphere that can feel reserved, especially at Tarantulas where the small takeoff zone fills up fast.

Access

Jalama sits at the end of the twisting, 14-mile Jalama Road off Highway 1. Plan on paid parking in the campground day-use area, around $10 per day, and you'll find a car park along with restrooms, showers, and camping.
