Joaquina Beach is the center of surfing in Santa Catarina, Brazil. Known for its consistent waves, it’s one of the most popular surf spots in the region. The beach features a sandy bottom with shifting sandbars that offer good conditions throughout the year. The town council has even installed stadium lighting, allowing for night surfing when the waves are fun. The area is easily accessible, making it a go-to spot for surfers visiting Florianopolis.
The surf at Joaquina can handle a range of swell sizes from about 1 meter (3 ft) up to an impressive 4.5 meters (15 ft). The best swell direction is Southeast, but it can also pick up swells from the Northeast and South. Most of the good waves here break to the left, but you can find rights too. The winds are usually best from the Northwest, particularly for cleaner conditions. Ideal tide heights are low to medium, but the beach breaks well across all tides. While it can get serious and heavy when the swell is big, it’s also suitable for beginners when conditions are smaller and more manageable.
Joaquina is known for its competitive vibe, so expect a heavy crowd, especially on solid days. The local scene can range from serious to a bit aggressive, particularly when the surf is pumping.
