Jocko's is a left reef pointbreak on the North Shore, named after local legend Jock Sutherland. Compared to its higher-profile neighbors, it hands you a relatively easy takeoff and long rides, but there's real substance here. When a big WNW-NW swell fills in, Jocko's turns into a proper, heavy left barrel.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from west through north to northeast (W-N-NE), and it lines up best on a northwest (NW) swell. It works from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 4.3 m / 14 ft, breaking over uneven reef, so this is a spot for solid days rather than small ones. The season runs through autumn, winter, and spring, and consistency is moderate, so you'll want to time your window when the swell lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a east (E) offshore wind to clean up the faces. Jocko's can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers ready to commit, and it rewards a shortboard or a gun when the size is up. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, and the atmosphere can feel reserved, so a bit of humility and patience goes a long way.
Respect the conditions too. When it's big, the current here is notoriously vicious, along with reef and rocks on the inside and the odd clean-up set on the biggest days. Watch it for a few sets before paddling out so you can read where the channel and takeoff zone sit.
Access
Jocko's is easy to reach, with a car park offering free parking plus roadside parking where authorized. There are showers on hand for after your session.
