Johanna is a powerful beachbreak on the western side of Cape Otway, where sand anchored by scattered bits of reef shapes both lefts and rights, plus a decent left off the eastern headland. It packs real punch.
When It Works
Because the western side of Cape Otway grabs every bit of available swell, Johanna often turns on when it's flat around Torquay. It draws swell from south through west (S-W), with south (S) the best match, and works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. It's a consistent break overall, though the central peaks can get out of control when there's too much swell or wind. Keep an eye on the size too, since Johanna has a habit of jumping up dramatically without warning.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast (NE) offshore wind. It breaks through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, and it usually holds better shape at lower tides.
Local Tips
Expect a busy lineup, especially in summer when the Torquay crew is around, and be ready for punishing paddle outs. Rips scour out channels that become indispensable once the swell hits head-high. It's a solid pick for intermediate surfers.
Access
There's a good campsite right behind the beach, with restrooms, showers, and camping on hand. Park in the car park for free or along the roadside. When the swell goes missing at Bells, Johanna steps in as the back-up venue for the comp.
