Jose Ignacio is a reef break on the Uruguayan coast that peels both left and right over an uneven reef. The left is the standout here, going hollow on the inside and looking classic on overhead days when the surrounding beaches are maxed out.
When It Works
This summer setup draws swell from the northeast through east-southeast to south, with an east swell the best match. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and you'll want enough size to clear the rocks on the inside before it comes to life. Consistency is moderate, so think worthwhile windows rather than surf every day.
Wind and Tide
The wave is offshore in a west wind, and it can also hold a southwest wind once the swell is big enough to clear the rocks. It breaks across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Jose Ignacio suits intermediate surfers, though the reef is tricky and picking out safe paddling channels takes some care. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on.
