Overview
K38/39, known as "The Ks," sits inside the breakwall of the Point Judith Harbor of Refuge and serves up one of the longer lefts on the East Coast. Two deep-water peaks define the spot: the lefts run as long, workable walls, while K39's more eastern take-off offers shorter, steeper rights. Don't expect barrels here, even when it's as big as it gets, which is part of why it's a favorite for longboarders and cruisers.
When It Works
This reef break over boulders draws swell from southeast to south, and south (S) is the direction that lines it up best. Both the left and right peaks come to life, with the lefts being the real draw. It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft. Consistency is somewhat inconsistent and average at best, so it takes the right setup to switch on.
Wind and Tide
Look for north (N) offshore wind, and in winter the northeasterlies are just enough offshore to groom it. It can work across low, mid, and high tide, though a rising tide is the better call and lower tides generally favor the spot.
Local Tips
Expect a busy lineup when it works. The mellow, barrel-free walls make it approachable for beginners and a natural fit for longboarders. Keep an eye out for motorized traffic in the harbor, including jetskis.
Access
Parking is restricted. There's no parking at the busy commercial port, so the best bet is to leave the car at the lighthouse and walk almost a mile along the breakwall to reach the peaks.
