Overview
K38, also known as El Morro, is a fast, hollow right that peels over an uneven reef. The bottom is cobblestone with larger rocks near the takeoff, and a few lower-quality lefts run down the inside, where they turn shallow. Just up the coast, K38.5 is another fast, walled-up right with a left, breaking between two rocky outcrops, while K39 sits further out and can turn any sizeable swell into quality lefts and rights.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with south swell the best match, though stronger west-to-northwest pulses also deliver. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and it takes the upper end in stride, simply breaking further out as the swell builds. Expect very consistent surf here.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind. The reef can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call; the heavier west-to-northwest days tend to come in best from low to mid.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate wave, and it pulls a heavy crowd, so expect a very busy lineup when it's on. To slip the thicker packs, paddle out to K39, which breaks on the outside and shares the same swells.
Access
There's a car park with free parking, along with paid and roadside options nearby. Car theft is a known problem here, so don't leave anything valuable in your vehicle.
