Kahuku Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Kahuku, also known as 7th Hole, sits off the 7th hole of the Kahuku Golf Course at the start of the Windward Side, just around the bend from the North Shore. It's a reef break that offers both a powerful left and right, split by a deep channel that's often sharky. When a solid northeast swell lines up with offshore winds from a passing front, it's one of the best spots on the Windward Side, with long rides and barrels, though catching it that good isn't all that common.

When It Works

Kahuku draws swell from north-northwest through north to east-southeast (NNW-N-ESE), with northeast the best match, though anything from the north to east can work. It's usable from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, breaking from head high up to a couple of feet overhead and beyond. There's surf year-round thanks to consistent easterly tradeswell, but it's best on winter north to northeast swells that coincide with offshore winds. Winter tends to be the standout season, with open exposure to northerly swells and the offshore wind events that come with passing fronts.

Wind and Tide

The offshore wind here is west-southwest (WSW), with a workable window running from south-southwest to west-northwest (SSW-WNW). Calm or offshore winds from south to west set up the wrapping right, while west to north-northwest suits the wrapping left. Persistent onshore trade winds usually leave conditions tattered, strongest through summer, so early mornings on lighter trade days and passing winter fronts are your best bet for clean surf. It works through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

When it's on, Kahuku asks for at least an intermediate level, but much of the time it's fairly mellow and open to a wide range of surfers and boards, from shortboards and fish to longboards, guns, and bodyboards. The lineup is usually quiet and can feel a little reserved, and the vibe is generally mellow. It stays uncrowded during strong onshore flow, but a crowd can show up on the days the wind turns offshore, especially on weekends. Watch for the reef, urchins, sharks, and currents.

Access

Cross the golf course at or near the 7th hole to reach the break. It's a long paddle out, though you get to use the channel, and the long rides mean long paddles back. When the spot's working, you'll figure out the way easily enough.
