Overview
Kanegahama is a sandy beach break that peels both left and right, with a more laid-back feel than nearby Okuragahama. The waves here are pretty average, but the spot still draws in a few good surfers alongside everyone else.
When It Works
Kanegahama draws swell from east through south, and lines up best on a southeast (SE) swell. It comes into its own on smaller days and stays rideable across a wide range, working from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. The sand bottom delivers moderately consistent surf, so you can usually count on something to ride when the swell is in the window.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean things up. The bank works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a welcoming spot for beginners, with gentle, forgiving waves to find your feet on. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, so factor in some company in the water.
Access
There is plenty on hand, including restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop, plus a campground if you want to stay close to the water. Cheap accommodation and camping keep an overnight easy, though the surf shop runs on the expensive side. For parking, you have a car park with free parking, paid parking, and roadside options to choose from.
