Overview
Kennett River is a rivermouth beach break that peels over a mix of uneven reef and sand, with waves breaking both left and right. In a south swell it throws up clean peaks that favour the rights running up the beach.
When It Works
The spot draws swell from southwest through southeast, with south swell the best match, and it's a consistent break that shows up often. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. South swells are when the rivermouth peaks really come to life. Nearby Kennett Point is reliably fun in smaller swells at lower tides.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind, though the break can hold up with some north in it too. It surfs on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a beginner-friendly wave, and Kennett Point in particular suits most abilities with its easy walls and peeling sections. Expect a busier lineup on weekends and holidays, though the crowd tends to be as mellow as the waves. If you're after something heavier, head south to Boneyards, the best right barrel on the coast.
