Kilcummin Harbour surf guide

Kilcummin Harbour is a surf spot located on the west coast of Ireland. It's a place where you can find a long left-hand wave that breaks just outside the harbor wall. This spot typically needs a swell coming from the North or a very large swell from the West to get things rolling. It’s a spot that caters mostly to intermediate and advanced surfers due to its punchy waves and shifting takeoff points.

The wave at Kilcummin can get pretty hefty, handling swells from about 1.5 meters (5 ft) to over 3 meters (10 ft). The best conditions usually happen during autumn and winter when you’ll find consistent swells coming in from the North-West or North-North-West. The wave breaks over a rock reef, so it’s essential to be cautious. You'll find the best surf when the wind is blowing from the South or South-South-West, and low tide is when the wave works best. Get ready for a lot of paddling—especially when the swell is big, as the waves here can reach head high to double overhead and beyond.

Access to Kilcummin Harbour is straightforward since you can park right by the harbor. However, keep in mind that this spot can get crowded fast when it’s firing, as many other areas become unmanageable. The local vibe tends to be pretty mellow, even with the crowds, mainly due to a rip that helps keep people moving. Just be cautious of the sharp rocks at the bottom and watch out for currents, especially at high tide. This place is pretty unique, so if you're up for a challenge, it's worth checking out.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Log your surf sessions to compare forecasts with real sessions and sharpen future predictions.

On the map, click a metric label to bring that arrow to the front — handy when arrows overlap.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Perfect
Good
Average
Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.
