Overview
Kina Road is a beachbreak with lefts and rights peeling either side of the river flow, breaking over a mix of uneven reef and sand. It holds decent quality, and the exposed peaks sit right in the wind, which also draws in the windsurfers.
When It Works
The break takes swell from southwest to north, with southwest the best direction. The lefts and rights on either side of the river can handle a bit of size and make the most of the available swell. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and stays consistent, so it comes to life fairly often.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind. Kina Road works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The lineup suits intermediate surfers and tends to stay fairly quiet when it's on. In small swells and northeast winds, the sucky rights at the end of Arawhata Road are worth a look.
Access
From New Plymouth, head south on the surf highway, State Highway 45. Near Oaonui, before you reach Opunake, turn right onto Kina Road and follow it down to the beach. There's camping nearby, along with free roadside parking.
