Overview
King Kong Right is a fast, gnarly right-hand reef wave breaking over live coral. It picks up plenty of swell and, on the right day, throws some big caverns for experienced riders. White tip reef sharks are a common sight in the water here.
When It Works
The reef favours a south swell, drawing from a window that runs southwest through southeast (SW-SE). It's usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, so it takes everything from solid to genuinely big. A southeast swell is when you'll see those larger caverns open up. Consistency is moderate, so keep an eye out for the days when it all lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind to groom it, with northerly through northeasterly winds bringing the biggest barrels. The catch is the southeast trades, which usually blow it out, so early or late in the day is the go. The reef can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave, fast and heavy over live coral, so it's no place to be learning. Expect a fairly quiet lineup when it's on.
