Overview
Kohala Lighthouse is a secluded, localised reef break tucked below the cliffs. The main peak holds a grunty left that peels across the inside of the bay and gets some shelter from the northeast trades thanks to the headland. The right off the same peak can barrel hard, though rocky outcrops start popping up and shorten the ride. Around the other side of the headland there's a second lefthander, but the water here is spooky, with a reputation for tiger sharks. A handful of other spots work nearby along the coast.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from northwest through northeast (NW-NE), with north the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, and it's moderately consistent, so you'll want to time your sessions. On bigger swells a right breaks out by the lighthouse with sections running right down the headland, and a larger peak starts showing further out.
Wind and Tide
Look for a south offshore wind to clean things up. The reef can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an advanced-only wave, so it's best left to experienced surfers. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on. If the lefts get oversubscribed, try the less crowded rights off the peak.
Access
There's a car park at the spot, but park carefully, remove any valuables, walk in, and keep a low profile.
