Overview
Kumera Patch is a left-hand boulder pointbreak near Okato that breaks a bit like Raglan. It's an excellent point, peeling long lefts down a bottom of boulders and sand.
When It Works
The point draws swell from southwest through northwest (SW-NW), with a southwest swell the best match, and any west swell will manufacture long walls that can turn hollow on the inside depending on how the sand is building up. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft and is moderately consistent, so the good windows come around when the setup lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from east through south. It can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, though the point is often onshore so timing the wind matters.
Local Tips
Kumera Patch suits intermediate surfers and up. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on.
Access
Getting out here is a mission. From New Plymouth, head southwest on Devon Street West and continue on South Road (State Highway 45) through Okato, then turn right onto Kaihihi Road and park at the end. From there it's about a 20-minute walk southwest along the beach to the point, and the road runs through private property. There's free roadside parking, though it's restricted.
