Kuta Beach Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Kuta Beach is Bali's most famous stretch of surf, a fine-grained beach break that has been introducing people to the sport since the 1930s. The tropical setting is largely buried under concrete these days, but the place still carries an aura that pulls in surfers of every level. On its day it throws up super-fast tunnels; other times it's all dribbly, knee-high corners. It's normal to see a dozen first-timers proning out their opening waves while a Balinese local casually punts a 360 alongside them. The sand itself is a scene of its own, with hawkers working the beach selling everything from paintings and jewelry to drinks, board hire and day trips.

When It Works

The waves break over sand and peel both left and right. Kuta draws swell from south through west, with southwest (SW) swell the best match, and works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. It sits on the Kuta-Legian strip, a long beach that holds plenty of quality peaks.

Wind and Tide

The trade winds tend to blow more offshore here, with east (E) the offshore direction and a workable wind window running from east to southeast. It's rideable across low, mid and high tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call and high tide is the pick, so mid to high is the window to aim for.

Local Tips

This is a friendly spot for beginners, which is a big part of its appeal. The lineup is well attended, especially by a local surfing community that demands respect. Because it's such a long stretch of beach, you can usually sidestep any hassle by walking to another peak.

Access

Getting in and out means dealing with Kuta's chaotic traffic, crowds of souvenir vendors and piles of rubbish. Board hire is easy to find right on the sand. Water quality is very dubious after rain, so it's worth keeping in mind.
