Kyle of Tongue Surf Forecast Guide

Kyle of Tongue is a deep bay in the far north of Scotland, where a long left and a long right peel up each side of the bay. Both waves break over sand. Strong, sweeping currents run through the setup, so this is a place for surfers who know how to handle themselves in moving water.

When It Works

The bay draws swell from northwest to northeast (NW-NE) and comes alive on a solid north (N) swell. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Don't count on it being on, though, it's an inconsistent spot that needs the right north swell to line up before those long walls start peeling.

Wind and Tide

Look for a south (S) offshore wind to groom the faces. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is expert-only terrain, between the size it needs, the sweeping currents, and the remote setting. The trade-off for that commitment is solitude: the lineup is almost always empty.

Access

Which wave you want decides where you park. Head to Talmine for the left and Coldbackie for the right. Both give you free roadside parking.
