L'Hermitage is a coral-reef pass that breaks along the edge of a natural lagoon reserve. The main wave is a tubing left that reels over live coral, so it has a defined, hollow shape rather than a soft, forgiving one.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest through southeast, and it lines up best on a north swell. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and tends to come alive on the smaller swells within that window. Consistency is moderate, so time your session for when the pieces come together.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast offshore wind, the rare direction that grooms this pass. It can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave. Between the live coral bottom and the sharky lineup, it rewards surfers who already know how to read a reef pass. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on.
Access
A current of around 5 knots runs through the pass. It makes paddling out easy but turns the trip back in into the hard part, so plan your exit before you commit.
