Overview
La Bocana is a fun sand-bottomed beachbreak and rivermouth about 30 minutes straight east of the Huatulco tourist zone. It sits very close to the road, so it is an easy check on the way past, and when it is small it is a great place to learn. The rivermouth is heavily sandbank dependent, but it is worth a look alongside the beachbreak.
Huatulco is the most recent tourist destination developed by the Mexican Government, who have been keen to learn from previous mistakes. Modern water and sewage systems keep waste out of its nine pristine, if waveless, bays.
When It Works
The spot draws swell from southwest through southeast, with south swell the best match. Waves break both left and right over sand, and it works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft. It is moderately consistent, so you will not score every visit, but the windows are there when the setup lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for north offshore wind. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is beginner territory, especially on the smaller days. The lineup tends to stay fairly quiet.
Access
There is a car park with free parking, plus roadside parking if you would rather pull up right by the sand. Facilities are on the beach.
