La Caleta surf guide

La Caleta is a surf spot located on the coastline, known for its unique wave setups and lively surf scene. It can be a bit tricky, but it offers decent options for surfers looking to catch some fun waves. The atmosphere is relaxed, and you'll find a mix of locals and visitors enjoying the surf.

The main wave here breaks as a righthander over an uneven reef, providing powerful walls and fast sections that intermediate surfers will find challenging yet enjoyable. There's also a left further east and another wave across the bay towards the town. The optimal swell direction is north, but it can handle swells from the northwest and northeast as well. You can expect to ride waves that start from around 2ft (0.6 meters) all the way up, making it suitable for a range of conditions. Timing is important; low, mid, and high tide all offer different experiences depending on the swell, and the best winds for this spot come from the south.

Besides the waves, be aware that La Caleta is currently facing threat from proposed jetty construction, which could impact the surf. The right side can have a lot of water moving, so it's good to be cautious and pick your lines wisely. It’s a place where intermediate surfers can improve their skills while enjoying the local vibe.
