Overview
La Couarde is a sand-bottomed beach break on the Île de Ré, and probably the most hollow wave on the island. Two rideable peaks sit on either side of a wooden jetty in front of the Pergola parking lot, serving up both lefts and rights. It stays fairly average until a really good west swell kicks in. Nearby, more reefy peaks show up towards Le Bois, and there's a good peak at Le Gouyot near Gros Jonc, by a big campsite.
When It Works
The break draws swell from southwest to northwest, with west swell the best match, and it really needs a solid west swell to turn on. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and is moderately consistent.
Wind and Tide
Look for north offshore wind. It works through mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
La Couarde suits intermediate surfers, and you can expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
