Overview
La Gamelle is an offshore reef that sits more than 200 metres out, marked these days by a metallic beacon after it caught out plenty of boats before it was identified. It breaks both left and right over an uneven mix of reef and sand. When everywhere else is maxing out, a wave peels off each side of the reef, with the right running shorter and hollower than the left. At high tide there is also a bodyboard shorebreak.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest through northwest, and southwest (SW) is the direction that lines it up best. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. It can be inconsistent, coming alive mainly when bigger swells are running and other spots are overpowered.
Wind and Tide
Look for south (S) offshore wind to clean it up. It surfs on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits competent intermediates and up. Expect a busy lineup, especially when everywhere else is maxed and surfers head here for a rideable option.
Access
Reaching the peak means a paddle of more than 200 metres offshore. There is a car park with free parking on shore.
