Overview
La Jolla Cove is a long, powerful big-wave left that breaks over boulders. The wave is thick and heavy rather than hollow, and it serves up great drops. On the days it turns on, most other spots in the area are closed out, and hundreds of spectators gather on the cliffs to watch.
When It Works
This is a rare-day wave that only comes to life during the biggest winter swells. It draws swell from the west to northwest, with northwest the best direction, and it works from 3 m / 10 ft to 7.6 m / 25 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast offshore wind. The point is best on mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an experts-only wave that demands real big-wave experience. Expect a crowded lineup on the days it breaks.
Access
You'll find it off Coast Boulevard, just east of Girard Avenue, with a lifeguard on hand and free roadside parking. Take care getting in and out: the cliff face is very rocky and rough with caves, so good timing matters when you enter and exit the water.
