Overview
La Muela is a right-hand pointbreak for experts only, breaking over an uneven reef in one of the better protected corners of the coast. It doesn't even start breaking until the swell is overhead, and from there it holds its shape as big as it gets, rumbling down the point with power and purpose. When it's really big, it turns into a tow spot.
When It Works
The point takes swell from north to northeast, and north is the direction that lines it up best. It works from 2.4 m / 8 ft to 5.5 m / 18 ft, so this is a wave that only switches on once a serious swell arrives. It can be somewhat inconsistent, but the windows are worth waiting for when a north swell fills in.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast offshore wind to clean up the point. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is expert territory, both for the size it needs and the way it breaks. The lineup stays fairly quiet most of the time, though it draws people when a north swell brings it to life.
