Playa Grande is located about 15 minutes past the town of Rio San Juan. This beach is known for its long rights that peel nicely down a reef in front of the main entrance. It’s a decent spot that can cater to both tourists and local surfers looking for a fun time in the water. While it's a bit off the beaten path, it still gets some attention, mainly because of the variety of peaks available, which makes it less crowded.

The surf at Playa Grande works best on a north swell, with ideal conditions occurring at 3 feet (about 1 meter). You’ll find waves breaking over an uneven reef and also some sand. Most of the waves are beach breaks, offering both lefts and rights, which is great for surfers looking for different options. When it's low to mid or high tide, you’ll usually find the best waves here. For wind conditions, a southeast breeze is preferred. This spot is suited for intermediate surfers, so if you're at that level, you’ll likely feel comfortable catching some waves.
