Overview
La Piste/VVF is a punchy sand-bottom beachbreak and one of the most photographed beaches on the coast, with semi-submerged blockhaus in the sand and a big dune system holding the suburbs back. It serves up lefts and rights, and perfect barrels are regularly on offer when it is on.
The waves can have more punch and urgency than just about anywhere in Hossegor, especially once it gets headhigh and above, with air drops and heavy beatings part of the deal.
When It Works
It works on west to north swell, with northwest the optimal direction. The usable swell range is 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft.
It needs more swell energy than the open beaches to the north, but it is a consistent spot and can be top quality when the conditions line up.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind is southeast. It hates onshore wind.
From low to mid tide is prime time, when the swell focuses on the banks. A rising tide is better.
Local Tips
This is a very busy spot, with gifted locals, tube-hungry visitors, shortboarders, and bodyboarders all chasing the shorebreak peaks. There can be more sand-dredging waves up toward the VVF camping village, though extra space is not guaranteed.
Strong currents are part of the setup, and it has been known to get tense, so only confident intermediates should try their luck.
Access
The big VVF camping village is on the beach. Facilities include showers and a lifeguard. Parking options include a car park with free parking, paid parking, and roadside parking.
