La Punta - Playa Zicatela surf guide

La Punta at Playa Zicatela is a popular surf spot located at the far south headland of the beach. It's a great alternative when the main break at Zicatela gets too crazy. This area is known for its fun waves and is often less intense, making it more accessible for many surfers. The environment is typically clean, and access is easy whether you choose to walk, drive, or take a bus from Zicatela. However, it can get crowded, especially with both locals and less experienced surfers looking to catch some waves.

This break features a left-hand point that can deliver a variety of waves, from mellow rides to more challenging sections. The swell predominantly comes from the south but can also handle north-west swells, measuring anywhere from 1.2 meters (4 feet) to 4.9 meters (16 feet). The waves break over sand and uneven reef, which adds to the fun but also requires some caution. The best conditions typically occur with east winds and work well at all tide heights: low, mid, and high. It's ideal for intermediate surfers who enjoy shortboards, fish, and bodyboards. Expect some long paddles back out after nice rides, especially during busy times.

The area is known for its heavy crowds and local vibe, so be mindful and respectful when you're out there. Late afternoons often bring lighter winds, and the surf can clean up nicely. Just remember that while it’s great for surfing, the locals are protective of their waves, so it’s best to keep things chill. Overall, La Punta offers versatility and fun for surfers looking for a break from the big waves at Zicatela.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Log your surf sessions to compare forecasts with real sessions and sharpen future predictions.

On the map, click a metric label to bring that arrow to the front — handy when arrows overlap.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Perfect
Good
Average
Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.
