Overview
La Ticla is a consistent river-mouth wave at the mouth of the Ostula River on mainland Mexico, and it's easy to spot from the Mex 200. It breaks as an A-frame over sand and cobbles, peeling into long walls with the odd feathering barrel, and offers both left and right options. It has a solid reputation as a good, reliable wave, which is a big part of why surfers keep coming back.
When It Works
La Ticla is at its best in spring, summer and autumn, when proper south swells start pouring in. It draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with south (S) the standout direction: the lefts really come alive on a bit of south to southwest swell, while the rights hold their own in west-northwest. It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, so everything from waist-high fun to overhead walls is on offer, and consistency is one of its strong points.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind. The wave works across low, mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
La Ticla suits intermediate surfers best, and it happily takes shortboards, fish, longboards and bodyboards. Expect a moderately busy lineup when a swell is running, though there's room to spread out if you walk north or south of the main peak. Beginners are better off heading south to Ixtapilla for easier walls. Keep an eye out for rips, rocks and sea urchins, be mindful of a higher shark factor, and take extra care after heavy rain. There have also been reports of campers being extorted for money in the area, so stay aware.
Access
Just look for the signs off the Mex 200. There's camping available at the spot.
