La'aloa Beach Park Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

La'aloa Beach Park, better known as Magic Sands or White Sands, is a rare Big Island beachbreak whose true Hawaiian name means "very sacred." It earns its Disappearing Sands nickname during large winter swells between December and March, when the golden bay-shore sand washes out to sea overnight and leaves bare lava rock behind. That happens because a deep, sand-bottomed scoop in the reef runs straight out to deep water just offshore.

When It Works

At heart this is a shoredump peak that favors bodysurfers and bodyboarders. The left rolls for a stretch before detonating over shallow water, which makes it the better side to ride, while the right asks you to pull in right at the takeoff. It draws swell from south through west (S-W) and is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. The break is moderately consistent and can work year-round, though summer is the most reliable window.

Wind and Tide

Mornings are the play here, with light wind and clean water before an afternoon seabreeze fills in. The workable wind window runs from northeast through east to southeast, with east (E) the true offshore. It can work through most of the tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is a beginner-friendly wave suited to bodyboarding, bodysurfing, and skimboarding. Expect a fairly quiet, somewhat reserved lineup, and bring humility and respect when you paddle out. On bigger swells the shorepound can slam you hard, and the exposed reef is worth respecting.

Access

Getting in is easy, with free parking at La'aloa Beach Park and roadside spots along Ali'i Drive. It's a very short paddle out, and you'll find restrooms and a lifeguard on hand.
