Overview
Lacanau is the surf hub for the Bordeaux area, a west-facing stretch of Atlantic beachbreak that has hosted contests since 1979. Well-placed groins shape 14km of sand into miles of quality peaks, and you can size things up straight from the boardwalk at Plage Centrale before choosing between spots like La Nord, La Sud and Super Sud. Facing the full force of the Atlantic, it makes use of just about every passing swell.
When It Works
The banks draw swell from southwest to northwest (SW-NW), with west (W) swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and holds more size thanks to the deep scalloped baines around the rock jetties. Autumn and winter are the standout seasons, when longer-period swells arrive consistently, though it stays rideable year-round and tends to see less surf than Hossegor to the south. When a huge swell hits there are no sheltered spots to retreat to.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Expect fast, peeling runners at low tide and shorebreak-style peaks tapering into the rips from mid to high.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate-friendly beachbreak that suits everything from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works, with a somewhat reserved atmosphere in the water. Watch for rip currents, which get especially wicked when it turns overhead and starts bombing.
Access
Access is simple, with a car park offering free parking plus roadside options. Facilities are well sorted, including restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school and a surf shop, with camping nearby.
