Overview
Lafitenia is a classic right-hand point tucked into a sheltered bay on southwest France's Basque coast. It reels for up to 250 yards, kicking off with a steep, stepped take-off that runs into a long wall and an occasionally hollow inside section good for a quick cover-up. The wave breaks over an uneven reef laced with sand, and it stays fairly friendly, welcoming a real mix of surfers.
When It Works
Lafitenia is at its best on northwest swell, though it pulls in anything from west to north (W-N), and more west in the swell helps the wall line up right across the bay. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. In bigger northwest swells the lineup wanders around over the sand-covered rock reef, which makes for a heavier, less predictable takeoff. Autumn and winter are the prime seasons, with October to February the standout window, but you can surf it year-round. Consistency is a little hit or miss.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast offshore wind. The headland gives the bay plenty of shelter, so easterly winds are fine and it even holds up in a northeast breeze. It surfs through low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. When the swell is small, high tide tends to shut it down.
Local Tips
This is a rewarding spot for intermediate surfers, and it takes everything from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards. Expect a busy lineup, especially through summer, with the Quiksilver European headquarters sitting right in front of the wave. The crew is largely tolerant, though the atmosphere can feel a touch reserved when it's crowded.
Access
Follow signs for Acotz and park in the car park just above Lafitenia Bay, where parking is free but spaces can be restricted. A campground sits on the hill above the wave, and you'll find restrooms, showers, and a surf school close by. Getting in is simple, just be ready for a long paddle back up the point when it's pumping.
