Overview
Laity Peak is a right-hand reef break off Ifaty, about 22 km (14 mi) north of Tulear's sand and mangroves. It breaks over live coral on a reef lying roughly 3 km (2 mi) offshore, and it's a long wave that can hold serious size, up to 12 ft (4 m) when it's really firing.
When It Works
The break draws swell from southwest through west (SW-W), with southwest (SW) the best direction. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, so it handles both smaller days and proper big surf. Consistency is moderate, so it pays to time your trip around a solid swell.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind, and aim to be out early before the trades fill in. The reef works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers, and the lineup stays fairly quiet.
Access
Reaching the reef means a boat trip out to the break, and tracking down one with a reliable engine can be the crux. Ifaty itself has several hotels if you want to base yourself close by.
