Lanzarote's east coast, running between Arrecife and Arrieta, is a fickle stretch that rarely breaks at all. When it does come to life, waves peel both left and right over a mix of uneven reef and sand. Around Arrecife and Costa Teguise the backdrop is heavily developed with hotels, apartments and harbours, while further north the coast turns barren and rocky with only a handful of surfable spots.
When It Works
It takes a strong north-to-east windswell to wake up the scattered small-wave spots along here. The coast draws swell from north through east, with northeast (NE) the best direction, and is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Most of these breaks are rock-scattered beaches or the odd reef, and every one of them is very fickle.
Wind and Tide
Look for west (W) offshore wind. These spots tend to come alive only on the push, so a rising tide is the better call, though low, mid and high tide can all be in play.
Local Tips
The waves here suit intermediate surfers. You won't be jostling for position with a surf crowd either, since the only crowds along this coast are package-holiday tourists.
