Overview
Lavallette is a sand-bottomed beachbreak on the New Jersey shore, with a few jetties helping shape both lefts and rights. It makes a quieter alternative to the big-name, big-crowd spots just to the north, so there's usually plenty of room to find your own peak. It's not normally the standout break in the area, but it can certainly turn fun when everything lines up.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south-southeast, and works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. The prime window runs autumn into winter, roughly September through March. Paddling out is mostly manageable, though it can get tough on the bigger days. Keep an eye out for the shallow bottom and rip currents once the surf picks up.
Wind and Tide
Look for west offshore wind to clean things up, with a workable wind window from southwest to northwest. On tide, low to mid is generally best, and a rising tide is the better call.
Local Tips
There's something here for everyone from beginner to expert, and it takes a wide range of boards, shortboards, fish, funboards, longboards, and bodyboards all fit. Expect a fairly quiet, somewhat reserved lineup and a mostly relaxed feel in the water.
Access
Getting to the sand is easy, but keep in mind you'll need a beach badge through the summer months, when tourist crowds also thicken up.
