Overview
Le Phare is a right-hand point that comes alive when swell wraps around the Pointe du Groin, turning big, stormy surf into long, mellow rights. It breaks over a mix of uneven reef and sand and can throw really long rides that run parallel to the beach, so plan on walking back up the sand to beat the sweep.
When It Works
The point draws swell from southwest through northwest (SW-NW), with southwest (SW) swell the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Consistency can be hit or miss, but the point still delivers worthwhile windows when the swell lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind, though any northerly component will do here. The wave comes in on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Rocks litter the line-up, so high tide is the safe bet.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers, and it's a favorite with longboarders when it's on. Expect a busy lineup when the point is working.
Access
Head for the vans carpark towards the lighthouse west of town. There's camping with campervan parking set up for legal overnighting, plus a car park offering free parking, paid parking, and roadside spots.
