Overview
Leo Carrillo, also known as Secos, is a right-hand reef wave that peaks up next to a large rock and reforms into a lively inside section. The bottom is cobblestone boulders, and the takeoff area is tight, so expect to share a small window with only a handful of surfers.
When It Works
The break draws swell from south to west (S-W), with southwest (SW) the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, so anything smaller tends to go flat and the biggest swells push things well overhead. It runs through spring, summer, and autumn, and is a consistent, fun wall when it lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for north (N) offshore wind to clean it up. The reef is best on mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate and expert surfers, and it takes just about any board, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, and even kiteboards. Expect a busy lineup when it works, with a somewhat reserved feel in the water.
Access
There are restrooms, showers, and camping on hand, plus a car park with free parking. Look for the signs on PCH.
