Les Culs Nuls is a sand-bottom beachbreak in the Hossegor stretch, with a reputation as one of the best tube-machines in Europe and beyond. When it lines up it fires thick, meaty shorebreak barrels that will have you picking sand out of every orifice for days. A huge offshore trench focuses incoming swell onto these few miles of golden sand, but the extreme French tides, which can move by around twenty feet, constantly reshape the banks: the sandbar you surf in the morning may be a closeout shorepound by lunch. It is also prone to Atlantic flat spells, so timing matters.
When It Works
The break draws swell from west to northwest (W-NW) and works from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. It is a beach and canyon setup that peels both left and right, and quality ranges from solid to world-class barrels when everything comes together. Autumn and winter are the seasons to target, with October through February the prime window.
Wind and Tide
Look for offshore east-southeast (ESE) wind, inside a workable wind window running from east to southeast (E-SE). The banks work on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call as the sand fills in.
Local Tips
This is a spot for intermediate to expert surfers, best tackled on a shortboard or, when it gets big, a gun. The lineup gets busy when it turns on, though bigger beachbreak swell tends to thin the crowd, and the atmosphere is fairly neutral. Be ready for a workout: paddling out is hard graft when it is pumping, and heavy poundings and strong sideshore currents come with the territory.
Access
Park at the Les Estagnots parking lot or pull up on the road in front of whichever peak you fancy. Stick to the marked access trails through the dunes, which are a fragile ecosystem.
