Overview
Les Donnants is the most consistent beachbreak on the island of Belle-Île, breaking over an uneven reef with some defined rights and a left that peels back into the cliff channel. When it isn't cooperating, there's more surf to the south at Herlin and over on the east side at Port An-Dro.
When It Works
The break draws swell from southwest through northwest (SW-NW), with west (W) swell the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, which gives you plenty of room across a range of conditions. Being the most reliable spot on the island, it's a solid first place to check.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind to clean things up. The break can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers well. Expect a busy lineup through the summer holidays, and keep an eye out for rocks in the water.
Access
Reach Belle-Île by car ferry from Quiberon, Port Navalo or Lorient, which runs year-round. In summer you'll find lifeguards, a surf school, and the usual beach-holiday amenities.
