Llangennith / Rhossili Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Llangennith / Rhossili is a five-kilometre stretch of beachbreak backed by a vast expanse of dunes, and one of the epicentres of the Welsh surf scene. It's hugely popular and picks up all the available swell, though the size of the beach and its shifting sandbars mean the waves tend to lack punch and definition. Three Peaks at the north end carries more size and power, while Rhossili at the south end picks up less swell and gets some shelter from winds out of the south quadrant.

When It Works

The beach draws swell from south through west, with southwest the best match, and it breaks regularly enough to be a dependable option. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, but it prefers small surf, since larger swells tend to close out and leave a punishing paddle through channel-free whitewater. Above head height that paddle out is renowned for its difficulty, so pick your days. Autumn, roughly September to November, tends to bring the cleaner swells. Both lefts and rights peel over the sand, and rips pick up when it gets bigger.

Wind and Tide

Look for east offshore wind. It works right through the tides, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is a friendly spot for beginners, and it takes just about any craft, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, bodyboards, and SUPs. Expect a moderately busy lineup, especially during holidays and weekends and around the access points, though there's plenty of room to spread out along the beach. The atmosphere can feel a little reserved.

Access

There's a car park behind the dunes with paid parking, plus restrooms, showers, and camping close to the beach. A surf school and surf shop round things out in the village.
