Magnet Bay is a small, scenic cove located on the Southern Coast, known for its unique surf experience. It's been a favorite spot for local surfers since the early 60s, particularly by the Midshore Boardriders club. The area offers a laid-back vibe and a stunning landscape, making it an inviting place for surfers looking to catch some waves.

The surf here generally works best with a south swell, making south, southeast, and southwest swells ideal. You can expect it to handle swell sizes up to about 3 feet (around 1 meter). The waves break over boulders, and while it’s mostly a left-hand break, the walls can get pretty juicy, giving you a decent ride length. It's worth noting that it handles more tide when the swell is bigger and is best at low to mid-tide. If the wind is coming from the north, that’s a good sign for conditions, but be aware that this spot is better suited for intermediate surfers, as the boulders and bull kelp can be tricky for less experienced riders.

Sometimes the cove can get crowded, especially when the conditions are right. If you want a more relaxed surf session or if you're a beginner, there are two sheltered beaches nearby, Tumbledown Bay and Te Oka Bay, which are more suitable for beginners and are a safer option away from the boulders of Magnet Bay. The walk to the beach is short, just a quick 2-minute stroll across a paddock, making it easy to get in and out.
