Mahia Reef surf guide

Mahia Reef is located around the front of the Mokotahi cliffs and provides a surf spot that attracts intermediate surfers. The vibe here is chill, making it a good option if you’re looking to catch some waves without a big crowd hanging around. The surf can be inconsistent, especially since nearby spots might be working better on the same day. So, it's wise to check a few conditions before heading out.

The surf mainly works on south swells, with a good setup for lefts breaking over the uneven reef. You can expect the surf to be best when the swell is around 3ft (about 0.9 meters), and it’s more reliable during mid to high tides. The best winds are from the northeast, which helps to shape the waves nicely. It's friendly for longboarders and those looking to improve since it tends to shoulder predictably, making it a fun session for those keen to practice their skills.

To get there, head north from Napier on State Highway 2, then follow the directions through Nuhaka until you reach Mahia Beach. Once you arrive, parking is easy just before the southern point of the beach, and it’s a short walk from there to the break. Keep in mind that although the spot can be hit or miss, the right conditions can make for a decent surf day.
