Overview
Mahunga Point is a left-hand reef break that peels off a boulder shelf at the northern end of the beach. It's a decent, approachable wave, and the broken-up shape of the reef spreads the small crowd around so it rarely bunches up in one spot.
When It Works
The point draws swell from northeast through southeast, with a northeast swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and it leans toward the bigger, more easterly end of that window. More water and some east in the swell bring out longer, crumbling lefts that improvers can ride a good distance. Consistency is moderate, so it won't fire every day, but worthwhile windows turn up fairly often.
Wind and Tide
Look for a west offshore wind to clean it up. It wants plenty of water, breaking best on mid to high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

The gentle, crumbling lefts make this a friendly spot for beginners looking to build up their pointbreak time. Expect a quiet lineup, and the spread-out reef keeps even that small crowd from stacking up in one place.
Access
The break sits at the northern end of Mahanga, reached via State Highway 2 north from Napier through Wairoa and Nuhaka. There's a car park with free parking alongside roadside parking, and facilities run to restrooms, showers, and camping.
