Ma'ili surf guide

Ma'ili Beach Park is a popular surf spot located on the Leeward Coast of Oahu. It offers a couple of fun wave options across its 40-acre area. The two main breaks are Green Lanterns and Tumbleland. Green Lanterns sits at the north end of the park, right by the jetty at the mouth of Ma'ili'ili Stream. On the south end is Tumbleland, which has a more powerful left-breaking reef break that offers faster, more technical lines.

When it comes to surfing, Ma'ili can handle swells from 3 to 7 feet (about 0.9 to 2.1 meters) and works best with NW and SSW to SW swells. Green Lanterns typically produces long rights that are decent on a medium-sized NW swell. Tumbleland shines on medium-sized SW swells, providing great conditions for more experienced surfers with its sharper, shallower bottom. The waves can be decent for beginners as well, especially on smaller days. You can expect the tide to be low to mid or mid to high for the best surf, and it’s ideal to have calm or offshore winds coming from the NE to SE.

Access to the beach is easy, and it's usually not overly crowded, although the weekends can bring more surfers to the main take-off spots. The vibe is generally mellow, so just remember to be chill and respect others in the water. Hazards like the reef can come into play, especially when the surf gets big, so just be aware and ready to handle it. Ma'ili delivers fun surf year-round, with the winter months bringing in a bit more power.
