Overview
Main Beach is one of several breaks scattered around Cottesloe, sharing the coast with spots like Cove, Seconds, Isolator, Dutch Inn and Deep 6. It's a reef break that peels both left and right over a mix of uneven reef and sand, and there are scattered chunks of reef and rock to steer around. Worth knowing before you paddle out: a fatal attack on a swimmer happened here in 2000.
When It Works
Main Beach draws swell from the southwest through northwest (SW-NW), and a southwest swell is the best match. The reef is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. It's a somewhat inconsistent break, generally smaller and less reliable than Triggs and Scarborough, but every now and then it goes off with fast walls and a few sucky sections.
Wind and Tide
Look for east offshore wind to clean it up. It works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The wave is manageable enough for beginners, but the lineup gets busy and tends to draw more of a crowd than Triggs and Scarborough.
Access
There's plenty on hand at the beach: restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school and a surf shop. For parking, there's a car park with free parking, along with paid and roadside options.
